Ciudad (pob., 2000: 121.578 hab.), capital del estado de Connecticut en EE.UU. Ubicada junto al río Connecticut, fue colonizada por comerciantes holandeses en la década de 1630.

En Hartford se adoptaron las Fundamental Orders of Connecticut (Órdenes fundamentales de Connecticut) (1639), que posteriormente sirvieron de modelo para la Constitución de los Estados Unidos de América. La principal actividad económica de la ciudad, el sector de los seguros, data de 1794 cuando en Hartford se emitió la primera póliza de seguros contra incendios. El edificio de la legislatura del estado (1796) fue diseñado por Charles Bulfinch. Entre las instituciones de enseñanza superior se cuenta el Trinity College. Es el lugar de nacimiento de J.P. Morgan y también hogar de Harriet Beecher Stowe y Mark Twain, cuyas casas se conservan hasta ahora.
